The Story Behind Hope Village
by Dr. Lisa Futrell
I never planned to step into the world of supportive, drug-free shared housing, but sometimes purpose rises from the very places that touch our hearts most deeply. For years, I prayed for a member of my family as she navigated substance use challenges. After 100 days in county jail and a period of residential treatment, she emerged with courage — but no safe, stable place to live. Bad credit, no job, and a record made ordinary housing out of reach.
When a shelter bed opened in San Diego, I hoped it would be a new beginning for her and her son. Instead, the chaotic and unsafe conditions made their journey harder. So I brought them home. My small home office became her bedroom. I drove her to school, appointments, and to a job 15 miles away until she could save for her own car. Over time, she paid off fees, reinstated her license, and step-by-step rebuilt her life.
Yet every time I reflected on that season, one truth remained clear: the lack of safe, supportive housing made recovery and stability far harder than it needed to be. I found myself wondering how many others were struggling simply because there was no place where they could rest, recover, and rebuild.
That question stirred something deep in me — a vision of homes rooted in structure, dignity, and community. Hope Village CA was born out of that vision: a place where supportive co-living residences offer people not just shelter, but safety, accountability, and a community that strengthens them. Here, hope is not just spoken — it is lived.
